My ten-year-old self glared at my older sister’s perfect artwork with the daffodil’s symmetrical petals and the even shading around the stem. When I return my gaze to my own drawing, I see crooked ovals around an imperfect circle, and I tear the paper in half. My pride wasn’t ready for my “failure.”
I’d like to think that I’ve gotten better at failing, and maybe I have. At least I don’t crumple paper when I don’t like the look of my handwriting, but I also don’t try as much. I think of all of the literary journals that I didn’t submit to because I feared rejection and the hobbies I didn’t try for fear of not being good enough. I missed oppurtunities because I was too scared to try.
This quote from L.M. Montgomery reminds us that we should try no matter the outcome.
“Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing.” ~ L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
I want to practice failing with humility, and I encourage you to do the same. This month, focus on accepting the fact that not everything results in success and try anyway.
